Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Road Test Review

Mitsubishi is taking on the behemoths like Fortuner and Endeavour with its Pajero Sport. We get behind the wheels to find out is it good enough?

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Review, Road Test Review

That Mitsubishi brand in India hasn't done well cannot take away from the fact that Pajero Sport is a comprehensively engineered product. It is an SUV which can stand any competition on its face and can even surprise many of the Auto enthusiasts by its off-roading ability. It is, in fact, a shame that such a wonderful off-road SUV is not getting big sales partly due to an ability of Mitsubishi to establish its market credentials and dealership network.

           Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

Still, we get behind the wheels of new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport to bring you this road test right from the heart of the action.

The design of Pajero Sport can be best summarized by the words muscular and butch. Remember it is an old-school SUV which is based upon ladder frame chassis which essentially means you will get generous ground clearance which is good enough to tackle even the worst roads.

           Handsomely built Pajero Sport

The styling upfront is also very aggressive thanks to the two-part grill flagged by equally hawkish headlamps. In the profile, the Pajero Sport feels well-proportioned and the credit must be given to the designer for balancing the front and rear overhangs in a graceful manner. In the back, the split tail lamps accentuate the width of the car and the large windscreen help to make the cabin feel airy.

Inside the cabin, the quality of materials and the grains used is quite upmarket; however, it is not as good as we have witnessed on the Toyota Fortuner. Touch screen infotainment system sits at the centre of the console and low down we have very Chunky Rotary dials for the air conditioning control. The dual-tone Dash is crafted excellently and the fit and finish job has been accomplished decently too.

              Spacious and quality interiors
                                                                   Spacious and quality interiors

Pajero Sport is a full-fledged SUV and comes with three seating rows. The first and second row is genuinely comfortable and offers good leg room, knee room, and headroom but the third-row seat, like other SUVs, is suitable only for the children.

Under the Hood, the Pajero Sport is powered by 2.5-Litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine capable of putting out 178 PS of max Power along with 400 Newton metre of Max torque. The choice on the transmission front is between 5-speed manual and 5-speed automatic. We tested the manual variant and found that there is a turbo lag below 2000 RPM which could feel cumbersome especially in the city; however, out on the highway once the engine rev past 2000 RPM, there is a strong Surge of power that endows this car with a healthy midrange.

Highway cruising is effortless and there is no problem whatsoever in overtaking maneuvers. The gear shifts are accurate and we wish company has provided an extra 6th gear in order to further enhance the cruising capability of the car. The variant has also got the super select four-wheel drive, the option that gives you the freedom to choose between two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive depending upon the terrain situation. The feature of the Differential lock makes Pajero Sport a true off-roader having the wonderful capability to conquer whatever is thrown on it.

We are highly impressed by the pliant ride quality of Pajero Sport and also it has some negative impact on the handling as Pajero Sport tends to roll a bit during the corners, most of the families will appreciate this decision of the Mitsubishi.

Pajero Sport excellent ride and average handling
Pajero Sport excellent ride and average handling

What else is also worth mentioning is the straight line stability of the car which is really really good. There is no need to work on the steering wheel during the straight line cruising despite the fact that there is a whole lot of feedback from the steering unit.

Mitsubishi has equipped Pajero Sport generously with SUV featuring dual-zone automatic climate control, rear camera display parking system, multifunctional steering wheel, paddle shifters in the automatic transmission variant, dual-stage front airbags, Anti-Lock Braking System with electronic brake force distribution, engine immobilizer, and impact sensing auto Door Unlock.

At a price of Rs 27.45 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the Pajero Sport is not a cheap buy and gets itself into Territory of Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. Pajero Sport is really impressive SUV and it can stand Head and Shoulder with the likes of Toyota and Ford, but the real problem here is the brand image of Mitsubishi. The perception of the customers about the company is certainly not the strongest point and Pajero Sport has to bear the brunt of this negative perception. Otherwise, we see no reason why the Pajero Sport should not be lapped up by the customer.
