Maruti is been quick to spot potential of AMT in increasingly chaotic Indian conditions. After unprecedented surge in the demand of Celerio AMT, it’s really not hard for the company to take decision on this front. By equipping Alto with AMT unit, Maruti has not only augmented its appeal but also tried to fend off the rising threat of rivals; chiefly from Renault Kwid. The company is facing shortage on supply side of AMT units; still it is not shying away from experimenting with the new permutations. Alto K10 AMT is latest gamble it has played and we get behind the wheels to gauge what its success chances are.
Engine, Transmission & Driving Dynamics
RThe standout addition to the Alto package is AMT unit which has been sourced from Celerio. The engine unit is same i.e. 1.0-litre K10 engine of very refined and rev-happy nature. The unit now returns 24.07 kmpl; 15% higher than the previous version. This improvement is largely due to reduction in the weight of the car. The new Alto K10 is approximately 75 kg lighter than its previous iteration.
Ride and handling compromise strikes a very good balance as neither of the aspect is over emphasised. Of course, slow-speed ride could be better but then it doesn't rise up to the level of intrusion. Once you get going, stability rises in a very steady and incremental way.
Design, Style & Interiors
Visually, Alto K10 AMT differs as new grille and reworked headlamps makes up for improved aesthetic turn-out. Profile hasn’t got much differentiation although rear has got new tail lamps and bumpers. Length of the car has been reduced by 75 mm compared to standard K10 although it has gained 15 mm over the width and height of standard Alto.
Inside the cabin, Maruti has tried to infuse some sportiness by choosing bold design and contemporary layout. That said, the company seems to have overplayed its hand as the whole arrangement in the middle feel cluttered. Still, there is no way one can question the utilitarian aspect of the car. The whole cabin is based upon the utility and although quality is average, controls are very user friendly and placed very ergonomically.
Space inside the cabin is good for four adults and while now with gained width and height you can accommodate fifth child occupant, squeezing fifth adult by no means will be comfortable even for a short run.
