Mahindra Thar Road Test Review

Mahindra Thar has received a cosmetic makeover along with addition of the mechanical differential. We get behind the wheels to findhow it now feels on the road now?

Mahindra Thar Road Test Review

Mahindra is selling Thar SUV in India for more than a half a decade now and despite being a very successful proposition, the number of facelifts it received is less compared to other Mahindra models. In the recent update, Mahindra has cosmetically changed some of the exteriors and also equipped Thar with locking differential; thereby enhancing its off-road capabilities. We get behind the wheels to find out whether Thar has finally got what it lacked in term of serious off-roading credentials.

Design, Style & Interiors

The Government of India has dictated new rules regarding motor vehicles according to which there can't be any gap between the front bumper and the body and accordingly, Mahindra has changed frontage of the car. Another criticism has been addressed by the company by scooping out front fenders which perhaps would have interfered with extra-large alloys the owners might have installed in their previous Thar. More importantly, though the rooftop is now made up of better quality material and doesn't feel crude like before. The changes have also been made to the wipers and motor assembly expected to elongate the life of motor-wiper assembly in the long run.

Vitara Brezza is a well-rounded design. Its balanced proportions and significant cues make it look rugged though sub-4m dimensional parameter somewhere dents into rugged character.

Inside the cabin, the things have really improved for the better and we applaud the effort of Mahindra in making the Thar desirable than before. You will get now lockable glove box and the instrument cluster has also got backlighting. Seating comfort has also taken a leap and thanks to the new seats sourced from old Mahindra Scorpio, the Thar is now much better to sit on. The steering wheel position has also been changed towards a little bit right which translates into a huge ergonomics improvement in toto. Even the dashboard has been raised a bit by the company and now comes with front demister to fight the foggy conditions.

Engine, Transmission & Driving Dynamics

Under the hood, there is familiar 2.5-liter common rail direct injection motor putting out 105 bhp along with 247 Nm of max torque. The performance is good enough to pull over even the stringent of the conditions and thanks to the high ground clearance; Thar will not get used in any kind of the terrain. The differential lock installed by the company helps to analyse the power to one wheel when the other one is stuck in the mud or pit. However, we aren't very happy with the position of 4-wheel drive lever which is placed very awkwardly. Even the 5-speed manual transmission lacks in precision as the gates are not well defined.

Overall Verdict

There is no doubt that Mahindra Thar is one of the most genuine off-roaders available in the Indian market today. Mahindra has put the efforts to make it even more comfortable to sit in as well as making it practical for daily usage; however, there are still some flaws which could have been addressed in this facelift. Also at an asking price of Rs 8.03 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), The Thar is not a cheap buy but then given the situation that there is no capable off-roader in such a price point, many of us will willing to bite the bullet despite some of the compromises.
