Hyundai Xcent Road Test Review 2017

Hyundai has launched new Xcent in India by integrating host of cosmetic changes.  Additionally, the company has updated the diesel engine to make the appeal of the car even more luring.

Hyundai Xcent Road Test Review

Hyundai Motors India Limited is struggling to find its rhythm back in compact Sedan segment and hence launched updated version of Xcent in India recently. Unlike the other updates which come only with few cosmetic touches here and there, 2017 Xcent seems to have got a proper and comprehensive revamping making it a very capable and decent offering.

Design, Style and Interiors

The prominent change happens in the form of new stylish look which is more upmarket than the outgoing model. The company has replaced the older grille with silver slatted hexagonal shape flat buy new headlines on either side. The bumper is now home to improved fog lamps which look stylish and upmarket in nature. In the profile, Hyundai has made no significant change however at the back, there is new tail lamp cluster which is wrapped around and add to the accentuated look of the car. Overall 2017 Xcent looks contemporary and more upmarket and undoubtedly is one of the best-looking cars in its segment.

The quality of the interiors is as good as it can and there is little to doubt about Hyundai fit and finish. Use of the upmarket material, soft touch plastic, and textured finish on the dash make the cabin a pleasant place to be in. 2017 Xcent edition manifest in the form of large 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system which comes with host of new features including Apple Carplay, android support and mirror-link connectivity. The top variant of the car comes with automatic climate control, cooled glove box, steering mounted audio controls, driver seat height adjustment while dual airbags standard across the range.

Front seats are comfortable however we felt them a bit soft on the support. This may cause a little bit less support to your back but for most of the city runs, these are almost perfect. One thing we wish Hyundai could have done away with is the fixed headrest on the front seats which is not a very good option from the safety viewpoint. Rear bench of the car is replying perfectly however it is not wide enough to sit 3 adults comfortably abreast. Rear seat comes with cup holder and can be used in order to make the journey comfortable especially the longer ones.

Engine, Transmission, and Driving Dynamics

2017 Xcent comes with the choice of two powertrains - 1.2-liter petrol and diesel engine. The company has updated the older 1.1-liter diesel motor, however, 1.2-liter continuous to remain the same. We get behind the wheels of the petrolengine and find the engine extremely smooth and defined. It is tried and tested Hyundai motor which comes with variable valve timing intelligent in order to maximize the performance as well as fuel efficiency. Part throttle response is a good and we feel no problem whatsoever in taking the car in the halting traffic of city without any fuss. The Indian has excellent drivability and you can literally drive in the City at the higher gear without having any need to downshift. Clutch action is very light and the 5-speed manual transmission proves to be very slick unit.

Overall engine transmission combo is perfect for the city drive and the company has given all the years to the previous feedback to make New Xcent a very practical City car. The driving dynamics has also been set according to the city preferences. The ride is quite plant and most of the bump absorptions happens without any noise from the suspension tower. There is better body roll when you go around the corner is very fast but overall body controls are on the safer side and don't threaten to go out of control even on the hard pushing.

Overall Verdict

2017 Hyundai Xcent range starts at Rs 5.38 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) which makes it a very good value for money proposition. The new version come with host of cosmetic changes and the overall cable quality is simply best in the class. It has also got the revised diesel engine and very practical and frugal petrol one making the light of the city traffic and highway driving. The car has lot of practicality with ample number of storage spaces and very modern and updated new touch screen infotainment system. Ride quality is also very adsorbent and there won't be any issue of discomfort for the front or rear occupants. Overall this new Hindi is a complete package and if you are into the market to buy a entry level sedan, you must check this out.
