Hyundai Verna Road Test Review

Hyundai has launched 5th generation Verna in India with great hope of reviving its dwindling fortunes in mid-size sedan. We get behind the wheel to get you the first impression of what it brings to table.

Hyundai Verna 2017: Road Test Review

Hyundai Motors India Limited has recently introduced 5th generation Verna in India at a starting price of Rs 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). the Hyundai Verna is struggling in the market for quite some time as its competitors like Honda City and maruti ciaz riding better value for money to the customers. Another reason that Fluidic Verna become long in the tooth and and hyundai hasn't given it proper facelift for the last 4 years. But now with the total investment of Rs 1000 crore, hyundai has brought us 5th generation Verna which is all set to take on the rivals to reclaim its lost Glory. The company claims that this model is all new with the underpinning of new platform. This new platform provides it high torsional rigidity as the company has used high strength tensile Steel in order to make the chassis of the car. This is going to be proved beneficial for the driving dynamics of the car which we are going to discuss in a bit.

Design, Style and Interiors

On the dimensional front, the car has grown from its predecessor it has still maintained its well-rounded character.

        Hyundai Verna Supervision cluster

Where is new cascading grill on the outside we've already witness on the Hyundai Xcent. You will be getting projector headlamps with daytime running lamps but the emphasis company want to place on is first in class projector fog lamps encased in quirky pentagon design.

Side profile of the car is characterized by 16 inch alloy wheels which are large still not be able to fill the well completely, chrome door handles, dropping coupe like roof line, and very stylish Chrome window line.

In fact the new
Hyundai Verna in its side profiles more like the Hyundai Elantra then its outgoing predecessor.

          Verna Front Ventilated Seats

Rear of the car is a bit dicey and we have felt it stout despite the presence of stylish black element which tries its best to break the bulk.

The real treat comes in the form of
LED tail lamps which are simply out of the world especially when lit. These Tail lamps also accentuates the width of the car and provides a more mature look to the sedan.

Step inside the cable and you will be grated buy good quality interior with the premium finish; something that Hyundai is known for. The dashboard is dual-tone showing the good combination of black and beige and despite being an all new layout, you will get a very familiar feel thanks to the use of material and parts that are source from other Hyundai cars.

              Verna 6-Airbags

The steering wheel feels nice to hold and it comes with telephony and audio buttons in addition to the housing cruise control unit.

There is a large
7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that sits in the middle of central Stack and it comes with a host of the capabilities including the new Autolink application from the Hyundai. You can connect your phone with the system and the Hyundai has provided both Apple Carplay and Android auto.

The front seats are generally comfortable but the highlight here is first in class heated and ventilated seats. This feature is very much useful especially in the hot climes like ours. Finding a good driving position is not difficult and driver seat height adjustment makes the things easier.
Compared to the front row, the rear bench lacks in the width and overall support, and when compared to the Rivals like
Honda City and Maruti ciaz, we find rear bench is a weak link in the Verna chain. Headroom is seriously compromised which is partly due to the availability of sunroof and coupe-like profile of the car.
             Verna Dashboard

The rear bench is set a bit low which makes the things a bit inconvenient for the tall passengers.

Hyundai has made some incremental capacity addition in the boot and although it is not best-in-class still it does its work satisfactorily.

Engine, Transmission, and Dynamics

You will be getting two engine choices under the hood -1.6-liter petrol and diesel. Unlike the previous model, Hyundai has done away with smaller 1.4-liter engines. The 1.6-liter diesel engine good sound 128 PS and 250 Nm of max Power and max torque respectively.

It has got a very linear power delivery which is a good thing especially in the city traffic and it pulls away very cleanly right from the start. The company has made sufficient changes to the engine in order to make it generate torque right from the low rev range.
The car has got decent mid-range too which help in making overtaking manoeuvres on the highway quite comfortably. The petrol engine, on the other hand, is very refined and absolutely silent while idling. It is so smooth that you will be hard pressed to know whether it is revving at standstill or not. It is also very tractable unit and performs well according to the city situations. It is not as enthusiastic in performance as the diesel motor still for the most of the city and highway duties it is going to be put sufficient.

One smart move that Hyundai has taken is to make both manual and
Automatic Transmission available in both petrol and diesel variants. Both gearboxes have 6 ratios and the manual one feels more comfortable while closing on the highway. The gates are well defined and both of the units are accurate in term of shifting precision. Out of the two, we will prefer 6-speed manual over the automatic transmission because the somewhere automatic gearbox is slow to respond.

The biggest improvement that new Verna features is on the ride and handling department. Thanks to the use of high tensile steel, the torsional rigidity of the car has gone up; manifesting improvement in terms of better ride and handling qualities.

Verna Stay Connected with your Hyundai

That’s to say the
New Verna is not as horribly soft sprung as the case with outgoing model and even the handling as input by a considerable margin. Hyundai has also made changes to the suspension geometry although we would like to have more feedback from the steering wheel.

Overall Verdict

On the value for money, new Verna has a considerable advantage over the Honda City but when it comes to the direct comparison with Maruti ciaz, it pales into insignificance. Still, in isolation, Hyundai Verna is good value for money especially when you consider the starting price of Rs 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The 2017 Verna features contemporary and futuristic design, comes equipped with many class leading features, has got performance oriented and fuel efficient Motors, and more importantly, features a considerable improvement in the ride and handling. In fact, it is a big step up from the last generation outgoing model. The only thing where it falters is the rear seat comfort where this new avatar doesn't feel as comfortable as its competitors like Honda City and MarutiCiaz. So if you can ignore this aspect then we think new Verna has all the qualities what it takes to be a winner.
