Honda WR-V Road Test Review

Honda’s latest launch, the WR-V has been world premiered in India.  We get behind the wheels to find out how much desirable this new Honda is.

Honda WR-V Road Test Review

Honda's first compact crossover, the WR-V has recently made its International debut in the Indian market and the company is confident of getting the chunk of buyers from the Maruti's Vitara Brezza. The car is based on Jazz hatchback although there are enough design cues that differentiate it from its hatchback cousin. Of late the compact crossover segment has witnessed exponential sales growth with Maruti Suzuki leading the pack with its very popular Vitara Brezza.

            Honda W-RV

No Surprise Honda has jumped into the Fray to claim its share however it will be interesting to witness how many people finally purchase this compact crossover as always the high price set by the Honda could play a spoilsport. Interestingly, Honda has launched WR-V only in two trim levels (base and top) which will be helpful for rationalizing the inventory and putting less I button on the dealerships. The company is confident that new proposition will strike a chord with the customers and whether this confidence has baking of the substance; we are going to check that out in this road test review of new Honda WR-V.

Design, Style, and Interiors

There is no denying the fact that WR-V is based upon Jazz hatchback which is very much a parent when 1 sets his eyes on this new Honda. Having said that WR-V is far more contemporary and youthful in it turn out and thanks to the use of aggressive headlights and bumper, WR-V feels very sure footed and confident in its personality. The nose of the car is little bit different from the Jazz thanks to the use of chunky Chrome strip running across the headlamps. Front bumper has also been given a muscular treatment which help the car to show its character a bit. There is no doubt that the company has put in comprehensive efforts to make WR-V more muscular and manly in nature, still there is no denying that in the profile the car is very much similar to the Jazz, WR-V comes with high ground clearance of 188 mm which is a 23 mm more than the Jazz hatchback.

Like the exterior, interiors of WR-V too share their symmetry and layout with the Jazz. Cabin space is roomy and four occupants can seat in utmost comfort. Equipment list is long with features like airbags and ABS, power windows with anti-pinch and one touch up and down, height adjustable driving seat, and automatic climate control etc. being the standard in top variant.

Both front and rear seats are wide and comfortable and top of the variant comes with driver seat height adjustment, which is also useful is not very generous in terms of adjusting the height. Driving seat has been set up bit low which hinders the visibility outside and hence, it is strongly recommended to go for top variant having the highest adjustment feature. Real benches large, wide and we'll have no problem to accommodate in the comfort. There is ample amount of leg room and head room available and there is no issue with the knee room as well. The cabin is appointed and like other Hondas' ghost of incredible practicality and ease of usage.

Engine, Transmission, & Dynamics

WR-V sharesits set of engines and transmissions with Jazz. This means motive force will be derived from 1.2-liter petrol and 1.5-liter diesel engine. Power output continues to be in the range of 90 PS for the petrol engine and 100 PS for the diesel motor. For now, there is no automatic option that has been made available to the buyers but in due course of the time we expect Honda to provide CVT option as well.

             Honda WR-V i-DTEC-Diesel-Engine

Petrol motor is very smooth and refined and having a little hesitation at low RPM, it is the one to go for if you really enjoy the driving experience. There is no Diesel clatter and crudeness attached to this motor and the Indians ability to freely rev act as icing on the cake. part throttle responses are very and this Honda has little difficulty in keeping up with the city traffic. Once out in the open, petrol motor provides good mid range however power seems to be tapered off around 6,000 rpm. we still love the smoothness of this i-VTEC motor which is not only a good performer but also comes with ARAI rated mileage of 17.5 kmpl. Diesel engine, on the other hand, comes with bigger 1.5-liter and although it leads in term of power and performance, it lags behind the petrol motor in terms of refinement and free revving ability. Gearbox is very slick and smooth. Gates are very well defined and gear lever which falls to hand very easily slots into without any considerable efforts.

           Honda WR-V Tail Gate Spoiler

Honda has equipped WR-V which superior Road dynamics and it shows in the way the car handles and rides. Especially we had apprehension about the handling ability of the car due to its raised stance, however; the car allays all our fears with its superb handling and riding manners. There is bit of a body roll but That Never Goes Out of Control to threaten you something disastrous. Brake pedal modulation is also very nice and the stopping power in extremely reassuring. On the top variant, anti-lock Braking System is a standard part of the equipment, it's so there will not be any issue regarding the braking on the slippery surface.

Overall Verdict

Like other Hondas, WR-V is also bit costly nature. Its base variant starts at Rs 7.75 lakh and top of the line VX diesel variant costs Rs 10 lakh (both prices, ex-showroom Delhi). There is no doubt that new WR-V is an attractive proposition with lot of going into its favour. It look stylish, comes with spacious and room interiors, is driven by powerful and performance oriented petrol and diesel Motors, and rides and handle very well too. The premium age of Honda further argument its desirability however; the only stumbling block that could played its fortunes is the high price. Indian market and customers are very price sensitive and paying above Rs 10 lakh for a compact crossover which is capable of sitting only 5 persons, is not a decision that will be digested by practical and sensitive Indian buyer. Still there is no denying that Honda has made a very serious attempt to crack the compact crossover segment and only time will tell whether its effort has been appreciated by the market or not.
