New Honda City 2017 Road Test Review

2017 Honda City comes with host of subtle improvements; thereby raising the bar for the competition. We get behind the wheels to find out how much difference these improvements have made.

Honda City 2017 Road Test Review

Honda cars India limited has many noteworthy models in their Indian line-up however the City sedan continues to remain the flagship model. This 3-box saloon has got the maximum share of the sale for years now although recently its sales are being heavily dented by the emerging competition like Maruti Ciaz. Currently, City Sedan is engaged in tough battle with Maruti Ciaz as both of these stalwarts are slugging it out for pole position in Indian automobile sector. The City sedan is now a couple of years old which has necessitated the Honda to launch facelift version in the coming year. Intensified competition in the Sedan segment with Maruti getting into the groove with Ciaz has presented tough challenge for the Honda and this facelift strategy is thought to counter the growing influence of Maruti. We get behind the wheels of new City to find how much improved this version over its predecessor. Design, Style, and Interiors

             Honda City

2017 Honda City comes with host of improvements on both outside and inside. The changes on the exterior include LED headlamps with DRLs, large 16-inch alloy wheels, and revised rear end with LED tail lamps. The arrow-shot design of the car remains intact as this new version also follows the same design philosophy. Company has also added new color to the existing range of sheets in order to enhance the appeal of the car among the prospective buyers.Inside the cabin, new Honda city has got all new 7” touch-screen infotainment system capable of connecting both android and Apple Carplay. The car has also got satellite based voice navigation system helping the owners to chart unfamiliar territories.

Importantly, the Honda engineers have raised the ground clearance by 10 mm which is not only useful for making the ride more comfortable but also comes as a sigh of relief for all those who complain about scratching the underbelly of the car is time they navigate through a higher road bump.

Engine, Transmission, & Dynamics

New Honda City continues to be powered by 1.5-liter diesel and petrol engines. The output of both the engines remains same at 119PS/145Nm for petrol and it 100PS/200Nm for the diesel version. Both manual and CVT gearbox will do the duty to channelize the power to the front wheels of the car in the manual while diesel version is mated with 6-speed manual only. Both the motors are rev-happy though diesel becomes a bit noisy at the higher revolutions. Fortunately, no such issue is with the petrol engine which is smooth, refined, and progressively linear throughout the rev range.

               Honda city Interior

Honda City is superbly stable and offer good cruising behavior thanks to the use of large wheel and wide rubber. The light steering is responsive and delights to use on the long stretches. It bristles with feedback and it is amazing how this car ride and handle on the road. Ride quality is plush and Honda has clearly prioritized in the favor of comfort of the occupant. Handling too is not bad although there is some body roll which is quite expected as there is increase in the ground clearance.

Overall Verdict

2017 Honda City comes at a starting price of Rs 8.50 lakh for the base petrol S MT variant. The top of the line fully equipped ZX MT diesel variant is priced towards the higher end customers at Rs 13.57 lakh (both prices, ex-showroom, Delhi). On value for money this car continues to disappoint especially the top-end diesel version is priced exaggeratedly high.  No doubt new Citycomes with the host of changes both on the exterior and interiors which has raised the bar for the competition; however, there is no denying that all these changes come at a hefty price. So if you can afford to ignore the pricing aspect, we don’t see any reason not to go for the 2017 Honda City which is far more accomplished than before.
