Honda Accord Hybrid Road Test Review

Honda Accord, in its 9th generation, has gone smarter and greener. We get behind the wheels to get you what it has on offer for the prospective buyers.

Honda Accord Hybrid Road Test Review

One of the most iconic and legendary offerings of Honda Cars India Limited is Accord sedan which after a certain hiatus handmade come back to Indian shores. Honda has already sold three generations of Accord which also makes its familiar car on the roads despite very high pricing.
             Honda Accord

What is the biggest change, however, this time is the hybrid power this Premium Sedan has got especially with Toyota Camry in its crosshairs.  In fact, Honda is offering new Accord only as a hybrid option as there is no petrol power driven conventional variant on the sale.

Engine, Transmission & Exteriors

Despite the hybrid power option, there is no let-up in the price which continues to remain on the higher side as the company is importing Accord Hybrid as a single unit. This makes a comparatively pricier than the Toyota Camry which is assembled in the Indian plant of Toyota Kirloskar Motors. On the outside, the new generation Accord looks nicer than the outgoing car thanks to the use of compact lines and smart details. There is less flab to the car and this newly found compactness in the 9th generation is sure to curry favour with the customers. In order to highlight the hybrid credentials, Honda has blued-detailing on the car which though doesn't look very nice and seems to be an afterthought. Honda has reduced the wheelbase slightly in order to make the car agile and according to the claims, new Accord is 40% stiffer than the outgoing model.
             Honda Accord 4-Cylinder Engine
The highlight of the car, however, is its hybrid powertrain which comes with the unique two-electric motor system coupled with 2.0-liter 145 PS petrol i-VTEC engine. Collectively the total output of the engine stands at 215 horses which are on the higher side and the customer also gets the three different driving modes to choose from - Engine, hybrid, and EV.
Honda Accord 8Way Power Adjustable Memory Funtion
Another smart technology offered by the Honda is that new Accord constantly shifts between these three driving modes; thereby maximizing the fuel efficiency and lowering the emission to the bare minimum.

Interiors and Dynamics

Inside the cabin, you will get a combination of soft elements and smart design which makes the car a good place to be in. Quality is almost spot on and it is hard to find fault with the overall stitching precision of the Honda. The ambient lighting and the modes swapping at the extra flavor to the Accord recipe and it is, in fact, these small details which really help to change the perception and win over the customer. Honda has also provided nose noise cancellation technology which helps to make the cabin quite; a boon for the owners who want to enjoy and relax in the backseat of the car after a hectic office schedule. Even the quality of the door pads has been notched up to drive home the message of luxury.
             Honda Accord Comfortably Thrilling
Being a long car, Accord is not for the craving corners. Even it doesn't pretend to do so which is a good thing as it is not going to overpromise about its capabilities. The steering wheel is well weighted and has got a nice feel to it. The suspension is set on the softer side in order to facilitate stress-free driving rather than satiating the driving enthusiasts. We also felt that on the undulating roads the Accord seems a bit soggy and sometimes tend to lose the grip.

Overall Verdict

At a price point of Rs 43.21 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the Honda Accord undoubtedly fares badly on value for money, especially when you compare it with the considerably cheaper Toyota Camry Hybrid. It, however, tends to fight back with the qualities like 23.1 kmpl of fuel efficiency, extremely powerful and entertaining performance, spacious and quiet cabin, stylish exteriors, and more importantly brand name of Honda. Still, we feel that Honda Accord Hybrid is for the Die Hard fans of Honda who are willing to go an extra mile (in this case spending the extra money) to get their hand on the green Accord. If you are one of these, go and grab your piece.
