2017 Ford EcoSport Test Drive, Road Test Review

Ford’s new EcoSport is all set to challenge Maruti Vitara Brezza and Tata Nexon. We get behind the wheels to find how much improved it is over its predecessor.

2017 Ford EcoSport Test Drive, Road Test

American car maker Ford kick started the trend of compact SUV in India with its well-received EcoSport. With the passage of time, EcoSport emerged as one of the best-selling cars in the Ford's portfolio and retained its leadership position in the market. It's only when Maruti launched Vitara Brezza which quickly went on to become people's favourite the Ford started to feel the heat of the competition. Another body blow to the Ford EcoSport came in the form of Tata Nexon which has attracted the prospective buyers with this unique design philosophy and value for money. Now in order to counter both these Rivals, ford India has launched 2017 EcoSport which comes with host of cosmetic changes as well as alterations Under the Hood. Now the big question is whether the New EcoSport is good enough to take on the likes of Maruti Vitara Brezza and Tata Nexon; and this is exactly what we are going to find in this road test review of 2017 Ford EcoSport.
Massive grille upfront

Design, Style & Interiors

Elegant design and muscular styling

The Ford has made considerable changes in the overall design of EcoSport and despite the over profile remains the same, the changes are very much apparent on both front and rear. The face of the new EcoSport is far more aggressive and the meek grill has now been replaced by a single frame Chrome plated aggressive nose. The turn indicators have moved down to the bumper and now integrated with the fog lamps. The changes in the profile and at the rear are very subtle and require a keen eye to get noticed. Changes have been made to the wheel diameter as well as on the rear bumpers but these can be easily missed and forgotten. Overall, it is the front face where the New EcoSport brings more aggression than the outgoing model.
Plush cabin and quality interiors

It is actually inside the cabin where the things have been drastically different between upcoming model and the outgoing model. Thankfully, Ford has done away with the cluttered theme and the new EcoSport features a very neat and clean look. The pride of the Place is the New touchscreen infotainment system which is very responsive, readable, and the contrast of the screen is just spot on. The climate control settings, as well as controls on the new EcoSport, are similar to what we have witnessed in Figo and Figo Aspire
Wide and plush front seats

Unfortunately, though the seating comfort and the amount of space at the rear bench have an increased to the degree we had desired. The width of the cabin remains the contentious issue and the boot space also feature among the average. Still, there is no doubt that ford has made a considerable effort in bringing simplicity and uncluttered theme in the New EcoSport which is a welcome move.
Steering mounted controls and airbag

2017 EcoSport gets an advantage in term of the features like dual airbags and Anti-Lock Braking System with electronic brake force distribution as a standard part of the equipment. You also get a large 8-inch touch screen infotainment system expectedly on the top variant when will also feature the newest Technology like tyre pressure monitoring system, paddle shifters for the automatic variant, cruise control, and reverse parking camera among others.

Engine, Transmission & Driving Dynamics

1.5-liter petrol motor

Under the Hood, new EcoSport has become the Launchpad for an all-new 1.5-liter petrol engine capable of putting out 123 PS and 150 Nm of Max Power and max torque respectively. This engine has replaceed both 1.0-liter EcoBoost and 1.5-liter petrol engine doing the duty in the outgoing model of EcoSport. Diesel choice, the other hand, continues with the existing 1.5-liter TdCi engine offering a decent combination of fuel efficiency and performance. The petrol engine is mated to 5-speed manual transmission as well as 6-speed automatic gearbox. There is no automatic option on the diesel variant at least for now.
6-speed automatic gearbox with Sport mode

We have driven petrol automatic variant of ecoSport and found it surprisingly convenient and eager in the city. The 6-speed auto gearbox ambles around in town without any hesitation and it is only when you want to get an Swift move on, you feel slight hesitation in gear change. That also means on the highways, you need to be bit careful and have to pre-plan the overtaking maneuvers. The in-gear acceleration of the Ford Ecosport automatic is on par with the Rivals and Ford has done a good job in matching the gear ratios of this automatic variant with the typical City driving condition on Indian roads. The car also offers the sports mode which makes the responses short and animates the overall driving experience to a certain degree.
Class-leading ride and handling

We have no hesitation in declaring that food continues to remain one of the best manufacturers when it comes to ride and handling department. 2017 EcoSport is an absolute joy to drive and its dynamics is sure to plaster a big smile on your face. at slow speeds, the right feels a bit firm but quickly improved and cushion the occupants once the driver picks up the pace. The highway stability of the car is absolutely stunning and you can also make unintentional lane changes without any serious resistance from the EcoSport. The body roll has been restricted to minimum and thanks to the availability of Anti-Lock Braking System with electronic brake force distribution; the brake pad feel is very reassuring.

Overall Verdict

Priced in the range of Rs 7.31-10.99 lakh (ex-showroom, delhi), 2017 EcoSport is not a cheap buy. In fact, it is the most expensive to buy when it comes to the top fully loaded variant among its rivals. This means Ford has no advantage in terms of value for money although we admit that new EcoSport offers much more equipment and overall improved proposition compared to the outgoing model. Ford has made considerable changes and we believe that attempt will not go unnoticed among the prospective buyers. The new EcoSport offers optimum combination of all the necessary ingredients for success although it remains shy away from emerging a winner among the Rivals.
