Volvo EREV Rating  :
VOLVO ELECTRIC VEHICLES: SAFE & PRACTICAL

Volvo equals safety is a well known fact. The company itself has worked hard on developing cars that are safer than other cars in the market. But with growing concern of deteriorating environment and world’s focus on developing Green technology cars, Volvo too like a responsible world citizen is now putting its resources in this development.

It recently presented it’s range of EREVs. EREV stands for ‘Extended Range Electrical Vehicles’. EREV seems to have overcome the problem of poor driving range of Electric Cars, which till date made 100% electrically powered cars more of a problem than an efficient green technology solution. The race to find a dependable solution if electrically driven cars ran out of battery power, has often prevented prospective buyers from buying 100% electrically operated cars.

Volvo’s 3 EREV related concepts to some extent have tried to dispel the issue of low driving range of electric cars through Its EREV based cars. All three concepts use the three cylinder gasoline engine which can either operate on gasoline or on Ethanol E85, even though extensive testing is still pending.

CONCEPT 1:  Concept car C-30 uses the series-hybrid arrangement. Electric engine sits under the front hood & gasoline engine at the rear.  Engine provides the power to batteries through generator charging the batteries or the generator provides the power directly to the front wheels. Charging the battery pack increases the driving range of the vehicles.

The engine specifications as well as other parameters are summarized as follows:

·         Engine capacity: 60HP.

·         Generator Capacity: 40HP.

·         Electric Motor Capacity: 114 HP.

·         Fuel Tank Capacity: 40 liters.

·         Extended range: 621 miles.

·         Total Range: 688 miles.

CONCEPT 2:  Concept 2 uses parallel hybrid structure, wherein the engine drives the car using rear drive mechanism. It’s a more powerful engine than the series arrangement engine which drives the rear wheels of the car through automatic transmission. The electric motor situated at the front drives  the front wheels thus driving the car on a 4 Wheel drive format.

The engine specifications as well as other parameters are summarized as follows:

·         Engine capacity: 190HP.

·         Generator Capacity: 40HP.

·         Electric Motor Capacity: 114 HP.

·         Fuel Tank Capacity: 40 liters.

·         Total Range: 728 miles

High capacity engine with two propulsion sources the car offers good speed keeping in contention with the conventional cars as far as whack is concerned.

CONCEPT 3: This concept combines the power sources i.e. electric as well as gasoline engine under the front hood and battery pack at the rear. Power from both the sources is used to drive the front wheel via two way automatic transmission. Initially the vehicle is driven on electric power mode switching to gasoline engine when the charge level reduces below a certain threshold level. The car is capable of offering a driving range of  621 miles.

The engine specifications as well as other parameters are summarized as follows:

·         Engine capacity: 190HP.

·         Generator Capacity: 40HP.

·         Electric Motor Capacity: 111 HP.

·         Fuel Tank Capacity: 45 liters.

·         Total Range: 621 miles.

Volvo’s desire to develop EREV’s  is seen in the backdrop of the development of similar concept by Chevrolet Volt, first EREV in the market. If electric vehicles are able to dispel the fear of practicality in terms of range, future will obviously belong to them.
