All automobiles of the modern era use an engine to provide power. The engines are called Internal Combustion Engines or ICE.

The internal combustion (IC) engine is the most common and widely used power source for motor vehicles, since the invention of the motor car. For well over a century, engineers have toyed with all kinds of other power plants but have, so far, failed to offer a more practical alternative to the IC engine. It’s because no other engine offers a more convenient and practical way of storing the energy (fuel) necessary for its conversion into mechanical energy, needed to power a vehicle. Unlike steam engines or battery-powered vehicles, the energy source for the IC engine is a relatively small tank of fuel that is light and easy to carry. The fuels for an internal combustion engine are stored in convenient liquid form, which makes them easy to transport and dispense into the vehicle’s fuel tank.
