Unsprung weight or unsprung mass is the weight of wheels, suspension as well as other components that are connected to it directly than being supported by suspension. Unsprung weight includes weight of components like wheel bearings, wheel axles, tyres, wheel hubs, a part of weight of the driveshafts, suspension links and shock absorbers. In some vehicles, the brakes might be fitted inside the wheel. However, the weight of the brakes is considered under unsprung weight. When the unsprung weight is reduced, it results in better ride and handling as it reduces the momentum that gets built up by the wheel due to its continuous travel. Though the alloy rims are ideal to reduce the unsprung weight but avoided for the better looks of the vehicle.
