This technique is frequently used by rally drivers for getting around corners quickly on looser surfaces although it is rarely seen in modern Formula 1 cars due to their high levels of grip. It is a driving technique where a driver deliberately oversteers and causes loss of traction on all the tires at the same time while maintaining the car control from entry to the exit of a corner. A car is said to be drifting when the rear slip angle is greater than the same at front to such an extent that often the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn, i.e., if a car is turning left, wheels are pointed right or vice versa, also known as opposite lock or counter – steering. To keep the engine in the power band gear sets can be replaced with closer ratios. These can be coarser dog engagement straight cut gears instead of synchronised helical gears for durability and faster shifting at the expense of noise and refinement. Wealthier drifters might use sequential gearboxes to make gear selection easier and faster while sequential shift lever adapters can also be used to make shifts easier without increasing gear – shift time.
