Space considerations are found in front wheel drive cars that have transaxles which are not of equal length. This will result in the torque steer. To avoid this, the car needs to have equal length drive shafts. Even then the torque steer will happen but only when the ride height of the one side is different that of the other side. To make the shaft equal in length, the manufacturer divides the longer shaft into two. The shaft that comes directly out of the transaxle is called intermediate shaft and will be supported by the bearing and the other piece is used as the axle on the other side of the car. The intermediate shaft is either linked to the differential by a yoke as well as CV joint or directly splined to the differential.  The outer end of the shaft come with support bracket as well as bearing assembly and is fastened to the engine block. The bearing assembly and the half shaft are connected by a CV joint.
