Electronic Transmission Control has replaced the hydro mechanical controls right from 1980s. But it still uses hydraulics to actuate clutches as well as bands. However, each hydraulic circuit is controlled by electric solenoids. Electric solenoids simplify the process of plumbing on the transmission thereby allowing more advanced control systems. All these have resulted in reduced engine emissions, better fuel economy, improved shift feel, greater shift system reliability, improved vehicle handling and improved shift speed. Electronic Transmission Control offers a wide variety of programmability which makes the appropriate transmission to be used for each application. Based on the data received from various sensors, it can either shift to a higher gear or lower gear. Some of them are also connected with ECU which diminishes spark timing which results in easing off the accelerator for the better upshift.
