Electronic Stability Program or Electronic Stability Control is a computerized technology that is evolved by the ABS. The program helps in the detection and reduction of loss of traction. This program uses the four wheel sensors available in the ABS along with steering wheel angle sensor as well as gyroscopic sensors. If the Electronic Stability Program senses the loss of steering control then it applies the brake automatically so that the vehicle could be steered to the place where the driver wants it to be i.e. the sensor reads the difference between the direction of the steering wheel as well as the direction in which the car is headed and the computer of the car makes the necessary correction to bring the car in line with where the driver wants it to be. Braking of the wheels are done automatically and individually i.e. the outer front wheel would counter the oversteer and the inner rear wheel counters understeer. Certain ESC will also reduce the power of engine until the driver regains the control of the car. The sensor also advices the ABS as to the wheels on the inside curve should brake more than that available outside and it also tells the measurement. However, it does not help in the cornering performance of the car but minimizes the loss of control. Not only the high performance car, but also any other car needs this system in place to protect themselves from any kind of accident. It is estimated that by using this technology 1/3 of the fatal accidents could be avoided. However, this will not work during the accident that takes place during stop and go traffic.
