The device that connects the component which is driving to a driven one; in automobiles, it connects the engine’s flywheel to the gearbox and further connects with the drive train. It allows the shifting of gears and ignition of the vehicle by disconnecting and reconnecting the drive train from the gearbox. The clutch usually consists of a driven plate that slides onto the gearbox and presses against the flywheel. The clutch pedal performs with an arrangement of levers to pull down the driven plate away from the flywheel. This happens when the drive train to the bed is connected. The pressure plate presses the driven plate against the flywheel using either a number of coil springs or a cone-shaped single diaphragm spring. A multi-plate clutch is also used in case of high performance driven vehicles since the loads to be transmitted are very high.  The clutch, in other words, engages and disengages the power transmission while shifting gears to power up or slow down the vehicle.  This is to avoid any friction between the driving and the driven plates and prevents any damage to either of them.  Manual Transmission and automatic transmission automobiles usually have more than one clutch installed. The best variety of clutches is friction clutches.  Clutches are made of a variety of materials including asbestos.  Modern technology employs compound organic resin with ceramic material or copper wire.  Ceramic materials are however used only for heavy vehicles or high performance driven vehicles.  Friction disk clutches are of two types, namely push type clutch or pull type clutch depending on the pressure plate location from the fulcrum points.
