Catalytic Converter

A mechanical device used in automobiles for reducing the harmful emissions created in the engine and exhaust system of a vehicle. It is a very important device as it deals with the harmful gases, which are created due to the combustion of fuel.

Catalytic converter is a mechanical device, which reduces a portion of pollutants by converting the harmful pollutants in exhaust gas into lesser harmful emissions through a chemical reaction even before it leaves the vehicles exhaust system. The catalytic converter is loaded with a special catalyst made of platinum and palladium that aid the chemical reactions to ensure that harmful carbon mono oxide formed by the combustion of gasoline, hydrocarbons formed by unburned fuel and other nitrogen oxide emissions are converted to less harmful Carbon-di-oxide, Water vapor and less harmful nitrous emissions. There are different Types of Catalytic Converters. The first type is the oxidation catalyst that reduces harmful pollutant emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and fuel hydrocarbons (HC) in the cars exhaust system. It is often used in combination simultaneously with a secondary air injection. However, the oxidation catalyst only reduces a portion of the pollutants. The second type is the Dual-bed Catalytic Converter. The dual-bed catalytic converter offers a major improvement. It is composed of two stages that are situated one behind the other. The first stage helps in reducing the amount of nitrogen oxide emissions and in the second stage; the hydrocarbons created by unburned fuel and carbon mono oxide are taken care of. The second type also has a secondary air injection is installed. The last type is the Three Way Catalytic Converter. The three-way catalytic is the only one, which reduces all three pollutants at the same time. It functions the most economically and is thus employed very often in modern day cars that are required to meet stringent emission standards. The catalyst used in a catalytic converter is made up of palladium, and a compound made using platinum that coated around ceramic beads.  They are also found in the form of honeycombs that are placed in a muffler like a package that is attached to the exhaust pipe. The catalyst used is extremely efficient and widely used in the automotive industry and pollution control has many regulations for vehicles. The catalytic converter contributes a lot for reducing the amount of pollution created as it deals with the harmful emissions and gases created in the engine and the exhaust systems of all the cars across the globe.
