Here are some definitions of types of all wheel drives and also will help in differentiating them:

4×4

Four-by-four (4x4)is the terrain seen generally in this class of vehicles. The first figure is tells us the number of wheels (more precisely, axle ends), and the second tell which of them are powered.

4WD

Four wheel drive (4WD) that can have a transfer case between front and rear axles (not differentials) which means that the front and rear drive shafts will be locked together while they are engaged. This helps in getting maximum torque at the axles. They can be selected to act as either part – time or full – time 4WD.

AWD

All Wheel drive (AWD) or permanent multiple – wheel drive refers to the drive terrain system which includes a differential between the front and rear drive shafts. This is generally coupled to some anti – slip technology which help the differentials to get different speeds. They have the ability to transfer torque from one wheel due to loss of traction at that wheel.
