Airmatic is a form of semi – active suspension of which is Solenoid valve actuated. This is most basic and economic form of semi-active suspensions. It consists of a solenoid valve which can alter the flow of the hydraulic medium inside the shock absorber, thereby changing the damping characteristics of the suspension setup. The command which is dependent over the control algorithm is sent to it by wires connected from controlling computer to the solenoids (this is also called the "Sky-Hook" technique). This type of system is used in Computer Command Ride (CCR) suspension system by Cadillac.
The “Airmatic” term is actually used by Mercedes – Benz for this air suspension for S-class exclusively. It not only compensates for different pay – loads automatically but also helps in raising the vehicle level by 25 millimeters manually, with the touch of a button on the instrument panel. This function is primarily used while driving over dirty tracks or badly potholed roads.
The active suspension can be referred for further information. The Airmatic is synonymous to Active suspension and therefore, has similar specification as of Active suspension.
