Airbags

Airbags are passive safety devices and requires no action to activate them unlike seatbelts wherein the occupants have to activate them.Airbags are passenger safety devices whose sole purpose is to sole down the speed of passenger to minimum or zero reducing the damage to as small as possible. Airbags are like soft cushion mounted inside the leather/ fabric wrap of steering wheel or dash board for the front passengers or even at sides for rear passengers. The slowing down is abrupt to halt the passenger’s motion. The entire process is carried in fraction of second.

Airbags are made out of thin Nylon fabric folded inside their respective places viz. Steering wheel, dashboard, seat or door. After sensing the impact the sensors activate the airbags at a speed in the range of 16 to 24 km/hr (speed of inflation). Crash information is carried to the sensors a microchip installed inside the accelerometer. The airbag’s inflation is carried out by the reaction of sodium azide (NaN3) with potassium nitrate (KNO3) to produce nitrogen gas. Hot blasts of so formed nitrogen gas inflate the airbags. Airbags come from their storage site with a speed crossing 300 km / hr, after the inflation the gas dissipates quickly helping the passenger de – board the vehicle safely and fast. The whole fraction takes place in 1/ 25th of the second.Cars today are equipped with intelligent airbags which unfold in stages according to the severity of the crash/ accident.Passenger’s presence is detected by passenger occupancy detecting sensor / switches which ensure that the airbags do not inflate in absence of the passenger in the seat. Airbags are used alongside seat – belts to save you from mishaps.
