Active Suspension

Those automotive suspensions which control the vertical movement of the wheels relative to the body chassis (vehicle’s body) with an onboard system are called active suspensions whereas passive of this is where the movement is entirely decided by the road. First harnessed by Formula One’s racing Team Lotus, Active suspension was pioneered more than two decades ago but it had many problems, like those of power consumption, Voise, Vibration, Harshness and cost which were the major cause to prevent its widespread introduction into passenger cars.

Active suspensions are generally divided into two main categories: purely active suspensions and semi – active/ adaptive suspensions which can further be divided into some categories. The Active suspensions make use of some sort of actuator which helps in raising or lowering the body chassis independently at each wheel whereas semi – active suspensions can only vary shock absorbers firmness in order to match changing dynamic conditions. Further, the purely active suspensions are divided into Hydraulic actuated and electromagnetic recuperative whereas the semi – active suspensions are divided into solenoid / valve actuated and magneto rheological damper.
 
The active suspensions allow various car companies or car parts manufacturer to attain a greater level of ride quality and car handling by keeping the tires at right angle to the road in corners, which gives better traction control. Further with the help on an onboard computer, body movement is detected from the sensors, put up throughout the vehicle and using the data calculated by opportune control techniques it controls the action of the active and adaptive suspensions. The system can virtually eliminate the body roll and pitch variation in quite a lot of driving situations including braking, cornering and accelerating.
