From among its range of impressive cars that have charmed consumers successfully across the globe, one of Volkswagen’s creations is a compact hatchback called the Volkswagen Polo. The Polo was first introduced to the world in 1975 and since then it went through five separate generations (up till 2009) and innumerable facelifts.
This vehicle was first launched in India as just the Volkswagen Polo in the year 2010, but then came the Polo GT TSI in 2013 with a much powerful engine and added refinements.
Externally, the Polo GT TSI doesn’t vary much from its predecessor except for the GT badge on the front grille, GT TSI badge on the boot lid and labels on the C pillar. It does however come adorned with the alloy wheels, body coloured door handles and mirrors and heat insulating glasses for side and rear windows. The halogen headlamps in black finish also look stylish and chic. Not to forget, the galvanised body of the Polo GT TSI comes with a 6 year anti corrosion warranty.
On the inside as well, not much has been changed but like always it is impressively done with high quality scratch resistant plastic and leather clothed gearshift knob and handbrake handle. The upholstery is the Superior ‘Milan’ Titanschwarz fabric which looks rich and elegant. It also has ‘Climatronic’ automatic air conditioning and dust/pollen filter. The Polo GT TSI is loaded with airbags and has an ABS (Anti Lock Brake System) - it comes with front disc brakes.
The Polo GT TSI is driven by the 4 cylinder petrol engine combined with a 7 speed automatic DSG (Dual Shift Gearbox) transmission. Due to this high technology gearbox, lag between gear shifting is lessened. The DSG box can be used at 3 modes. ‘D’ is programmed to upshift at the earliest. In ‘S’, it stays at the lowest gear possible and ‘M’ is the manual mode. The vehicle rolls out a maximum power of 105 PS @ 5000 rpm and a highest torque of 175 Nm @ 1500-4100 rpm. Largely, the Polo GT TSI has a smooth driveability as it grips the road and manoeuvres accurately. It also comes laden with the Electronic Stabilisation program or the ESP which ensures that the vehicle stays gripped to the road even while the accelerator is pressed hard. Volkswagen also claims that the vehicle delivers an ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) certified mileage of 17.2 kms/litre.
The Volkswagen Polo GT TSI comes in three colours: Candy White, Flash Red and Deep Black and carries a price tag of 7.99 lakh (ex showroom price- Delhi). Also, the car is available only in the Highline segment.
The Volkswagen Polo is no ordinary car and it’s evident by the fact that it was awarded the 2010 World Car of the Year and the addition of the TSI engine only makes the variant better. Thus owing to some great technology and overall fine quality, this car is a speedster that is already running fast and overtaking some others in its league.
