Nissan launched its Evalia a multi-purpose(MPV) model, with Nissan seeking to gear up for new horizon in the Indian automobile market. Until now, Nissan had only two of its best models Micra and Sunny making a niche for itself. Nissan brought Evalia when the segment of MPV was sweeping market with demand for family-mover or family-carrier and also for commercial purpose was prevailing.
Being first showcased in Tokyo Motor Show 2007 as Nissan NV200 in Light Commercial Vehicle category, it soon saw a wide market launch in a series of succession,in various countries, in ensuing years. In India, Nissan unveiled it in Auto Expo 2012 and finally launched in September 2012. Evalia becomes the third locally-produced model for Nissan at its world-class production line at Oragadam plant near Chennai.
Evalia comes loaded with impressive interiors, host of features and safety provisions. It has dual-tone beige interiors with the style and comfort being of Nissan`s impeccable class. The dashboard looks well-organised and less cluttered with all the control buttons, cup-holders moulds at both ends of dashboard,open glove-box, audio system and AC vents being precise. The steering wheel is also well placed for driver being able to have decent view ofmeter-cluster, road-view and hassle-free driving experience. The gear also being mountedclosely to the dashboard adds to the comfort of the driver. It is a 7-seater with seats having fabric covers and is supportive for all the passengers.
With roof being at height and seating facility organized well it gives all the occupants comfortable headroom and knee room. The second-row seats are split able so as to give access to the third-row seats, which are broad-enough for 2 people and could be folded, also reclined as well.The rear seats are adjustable to take-in good amount of luggage. The front seats have trays on their back and in total there is 10 cup-holders, all furnished well-across seating arrangement. The rear sliding-doors give easy ingress and egress to small children and elderly passengers. The third row has dedicated overhead AC duct, keeping whole cabin fresh and cool.
Nissan has kept the exterior design very natural and straight-forward taking its cue from its own design books. It has a basic boxy and van-like look. The front looks decent with its front black grille merging well enough with headlamps. The slim headlamp cluster is swept-backwards slightly, giving nice uplifting design to its front-structure. Nissan badge takes its honour, being positioned on the grille. Evalia wears a broad body-coloured bumper with lower part having twin black slats and having the fog lamps at both corner sides. The front window is wide and has oblong design, keeping the driver`s visibility to the maximum, with broad body-coloured ORVM`s. The passenger window has a clean and continuous pattern-look. At the rear, Evalia has huge tailgate opening upwards with reflectors stacked on to it, complementing the small and simple tail lamps. Evalia is 1.69m wide, 4.4m long and its height is 1.86m.
Nissan is only available in diesel options with 1461cc displacement dCi diesel unit, generating a max power of 86bhp at 3750rpm and 200Nm of torque at 2000rpm. It`s a DOHC engine with 4 in line cylinders of Renault-Nissan`s K9K family. Its output on the road is smooth with minimum turbo lag. The engine is mated with 5 speed manual gearboxes fine-tuned for carrying heavy load. Housing the tried and tested engine, Evalia gives a segment-topping, ARAI tested mileage of 19.3kmpl.
With price range from 8.7 to 10.24 lakhs, the Evalia has four variants available in India - XE, XE+, XL and XV. It is available in 5 colours - Mineral Red, Arctic Silver, Castle Grey, Pearl White and Arctic White. Nissan has all the basic safety features provided in all its variants like ABS, EBD, Airbags, Immobilizer, Central locking and child safety lock.Evalia has all these features like power steering, front power windows, cup-holders, Electric mirrors, tachometer, front arm-rests, driver-info display, remote boot release, chrome grille, air conditioning and tilt steering in all its variants, whereas features like auto down for power windows, rear AC vents, audio system, keyless start-stop button, reversing camera, keyless entry, fog lights and alloy wheels are variant specific.
Evalia is leaving its mark in the market with simple design and efficiently performing engine. Nissan has done fantastic work in Evalia, having the most basic design from outside and keeping the utilitarian approach for maximum utilisation of space available inside. It is checking offthe entire right thing to make practicality the main trait for the MPV segment.
