Mercedes Benz CLS Class

Mercedes Benz CLS Class available in 1 variant

The executive four door coupe as we know it today, Mercedes Benz CLS was first launched in 2004 and it is based on W211 E Class. The second generation of this car made its advent in September 2010 and production process for the same started in early 2011.

With the CLS, Mercedes Benz re-entered the executive size coupe market after stopping the E Class Coupe (a 2-door saloon)’s production in 1995. In fact the E Class was not continued in its coupe variants at all because the German automaker decided to bring out smaller version based on the compact CLK Class.

The credit for designing Mercedes Benz CLS Class goes to Michael Fink, an American automotive designer. As per a press release by the company, this car was created to blend the “strong, emotive charisma” of a coupe with the “comfort and practicality” of a sedan. Just ignore the fact that it has 4 doors and the CLS’s design essentially resembles a coupe’s because its smooth roofline trims down the rear passenger space to a 2+2 set up.

Since its original model came to markets, the charm of CLS Class was its athleticism that was also restrained a bit by its elegance. But the latest model looks both alluring and aggressive, reflecting the hard work that Mercedes Benz designers have put in. The sharp edged headlamps dotted with LEDs, and large upright front grille define the face. And the expansive bonnet gives it the characteristic profile of a rich, sumptuous car.

Viewed from the side, it does look long and graceful (measures 4940 mm). The flanks are sliced up by several lines for a hint of that edgy feel. At the back there is a short deck and moves downward dramatically. The triangular tail lamps also lined by an LED string look stylish and do draw attention. With a large bumper, the assertive stance of CLS class is also maintained at the back.

As you get in, the cabin exudes a feel of class and refinement. The three spoke steering wheel puts the driver in a commanding position with its solid grip and the audio control switches on its left beam. A glossy finish in the curvaceous dashboard enhances its elegant look. Unsurprisingly, the quality of all materials and design ergonomics are best-in-class.

COMAND Online multimedia system comes with an Internet browser and combines all audio, telephone and navigation functions. With optimum control concept, its operation is truly user-friendly and smart. All displays in the central instrument panel can be easily read and their settings can be adjusted intuitively through the multifunction TFT display. You can connect your Bluetooth enabled smartphones for handsfree calling on the move.

The interiors have been designed for maximum comfort and utility. Door pockets, cubby holes and a large glovebox make place for storage of knick-knacks. The ambient lighting creates a pleasing indirect lighting effect inside the car at night. Luminous surfaces on the instrument panel and under the door trim elements combine to make for a luxurious ambience.

All modern safety features used by Mercedes Benz have been put into the CLS Class. Along with front airbags, the cabin has side-impact airbags for front seats and side curtain airbags for all seats. The airbags and seatbelts are also aligned with a smart sensor system that detects and reacts to severity of collision. Anti lock braking system, electronic stability program and traction control are other safety features in the coupe.

The CLS variant available in India – CLS 350 – is driven by 3498 cc V6 cylinder petrol engine that churns out 306 ps of power and 37 kgm of torque. Its 7 speed automatic gearbox makes it a pleasure to drive this luxury coupe. A limited edition 63 AMG variant has 5641 cc, 8 cylinder petrol engine. While the CLS 350 costs Rs 93.20 lakhs, the AMG version has a price tag of Rs 1.24 crore (ex showroom prices Delhi).

You can get this coupe in a customised version by choosing your favourite colour from a wide range that includes Alabaster White, Metallic Obsidian Black, Metallic Carneol Red, Metallic Cubanite Silver, Metallic Travertine Beige, Metallic Tanzanite Blue, Metallic Iridium Silver and Metallic Perlite Grey.

Mercedes Benz CLS Class has been the winner of Golden Steering Wheel Award in 2010. It was also awarded the ‘Best Prestige Car over $100,000’ in Melbourne.

An alluring car to look at, the CLS is also a good performer being quick in straight line and around corners. Its refined and flexible engine, speed composure and the practicality of four doors make it a truly exclusive coupe.

Mercedes Benz CLS Class 350 Blue Efficiency

Mercedes Benz’s four door coupe like saloon that was launched in 2004, created a new category of practical coupes in the luxury car segment. The CLS Class also received a facelift in 2011 though there is no new diesel version yet. As an attr
