Maruti Alto is an Indian built version of the fifth generation Alto by Maruti Suzuki. It has been in the Indian market since 2000. In the year 2012, a newer version of Alto, Alto 800 was launched in India. Since its launch the car has been quite well received by the customers. Its earlier version Alto was also one of the bestselling hatchbacks in India.
The Alto 800 comes into 7 different variants: Maruti Alto 800 STD, Maruti Alto 800 STD CNG, Maruti Alto 800 LX, Maruti Alto 800 LX CNG, Maruti Alto 800 LXI, Maruti Alto 800 LXI (Airbag) and Maruti Alto 800 LXI CNG. At this point of time the car has stiff competition with Hyundai Eon.
The first thing mentionable in the car is the interior which has received a lot of improvements as compared to the existing Alto. The grey and brown colour in no doubt gives it an up-market feeling. The dashboard looks fresh and less cluttered as compared to the existing Alto. It gives a more stylish and modern feeling. The seats are slim then before, have integrated headrests and an increased inside space. Though, the seats are not much comfortable. For tall people the legroom height may be an issue. The top variant of the new Alto 800 consists of front power windows, power steering and AC with heater. You will also have to spend extra to get the music system as there is no company fitted audio system in it. Other features include remote fuel lid and back door opener, dual trip meter and sun visor for the driver for front passenger or the driver.
In terms of the exterior the Alto 800 looks more stylish and appealing than the previous Alto. The front view has the most prominent change with the introduction of new set of angular headlights and edgy bumper. The radiator grille sports the Suzuki logo over it and is very thin. The side view of the car is almost similar to the existing alto. The other striking feature of the car is the body coloured outside door-handles and powerful looking wheels. Moving on to the rear end, there is a large multi-element tail-light and a sharply sculpted bumper that adds to the style.
Moving on to the safety quotient, the car is a bit disappointment with no Driver airbag in any variant and is only available as an optional in the Petrol variant. However, it has collapsible steering column, high mounted stop lamp, immobilizer, high light leveling to name few in terms of safety features.
The Alto 800 is powered by 796cc engine, 3 cylinders and F8D engine type. It generates a maximum power of 48PS @ 6000rpm and torque of 69nm @ 3500 rpm. The presence of Cable Type Gear Shift has made the gear shifting smoother.
Standing true to its reputation Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. has delivered a good vehicle in terms of mileage of Alto 800. The petrol variant of this new vehicle promises to deliver 22.74kmpl while the CNG variant promises to deliver 30.46kmpl.
Overall Maruti Suzuki has delivered an excellent car in this segment and stood up to the expectations of customers leaving beside its only disappointment in terms of safety.
