26 October 2016 Indian arm of Japanese car maker Honda today launched Accord Hybrid at starting price of Rs 37 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). This signal the change of the focus of Japanese auto major which after launching prepositions in sedan and hatchback segment hasnow turned its focus on premium category. Now in its 9th generation, new Accord Hybrid will be sold in India as completely built unit (CBU) and available only in hybrid form. This hybrid model combines output of 4-cylinder i-VTEC petrol motor with two electric motors and combined capacity is rated at 215 PS. The power will be delivered to the wheels via continuous variable transmission (CVT) which offers three modes: EV,ECON and Sport. Fuel efficiency is pretty impressive the company claims that accord Hybrid will return the mileage of 23.1 kmpl. The car comes loaded with features and equipment among with dual zone climate control, dual touch screen infotainment system with navigation and reverse camera, and blind spot detection capabilities are the prominent ones. The designing has been week in order to give the impression of newness however there is apparent similarity between outgoing and incoming model. 18-inch Diamond cut alloy wheels, LED headlights and fog lamps, impressively redesigned rear are among the highlights of new Accord Hybrid.
Accord is one of the most successful sedans by Honda which is in the international market since 1976. Ever since its launch it has risen from the ashes to one of the hottest selling. The car was launched in India in the year 2008 while it was in its 8th generation.
The 1st generation Honda Accord was launched in the year 1976, 2nd generation in 1982, 3rd generation in 1986, 4th generation in 1990, 5th generation in 1994, 6th generation in 1998, 7th generation in 2003 and the 8th generation in 2008 to till date.
Since its launch the Accord has won several awards; it was awarded “India’s Favourite Car for Chaffeur-Driven Executives 2009”, “2009 Best Luxury Car” by UTVi Autocar Awards and “No1 Entry Luxury Car” by TNS Total Customer Satisfaction Study, 2006 to name few. The car is competing with the likes of Volkswagon Passat and Skoda Superb among the many others.
In terms of engine, the Honda Accord is powered with two different types of engine namely 2.4 L 16 Valve DOHC-iVTEC engine and 3.5 L 24 Valve SOHC iVTEC V6 engine. These variants are available in automatic as well as manual transmissions.
The 2.4 L i-VTEC engine can deliver a maximum power of 180 PS @6500 rpm and maximum torque of 222 Nm @4300 rpm. It has a displacement of 2,354 CC. It has Drive-by-Wire-Technology that uses an electronic position sensor connected to the accelerator pedal that sends an electronic signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The 3.5 L i-VTEC engine can deliver a maximum power of 275 PS @6200 rpm and maximum torque of 339 NM @5000 rpm. It has a displacement of 3,471 CC. The engine has Variable Cylinder Management Technology (VCM) that helps maximize performance and fuel efficiency. This engine variant also uses ACM (Active Engine Mount System) & ANC (Active Noise Control) technology that helps control engine vibration and nullifies unwanted noise that may occur due to the harmonics of cylinder operation.
The 2.4 L manual transmission engine can deliver fuel efficiency of 9 kmpl in the city road conditions and 12 kmpl on the highways where as the 2.4 L automatic transmission engine can deliver 8.5 kmpl in the city road conditions and 11 kmpl on the highways. The 3.5 V6 engine can deliver fuel efficiency of about 7 kmpl in city road conditions and 10.5 kmpl on the highways.
From the exterior, the Accord symbolizes style and sophistication. The front grille, sporty alloy wheels and the new electric sunroof catches the attention immediately. The stretched dual barrel headlights and lines along the hood impart greater appeal to the car. The long bonnet and the front bumpers give it a strong character. From the side, a sharp line runs all across the side profile. The ORVMs have turn indicators on it. The chrome finished door handles and the window lines look impressive. Moving on to the rear section, it has a raised boot lines. The bold taillight clusters run from the side to the rear.
The exterior length of Honda Accord is 4,950 mm, width is 1,845 mm and height is 1,475 mm.
Step inside and the artistic and well groomed interior is sure to attract you. The interiors are spacious and the front and rear seats are good enough to make you feel comfortable even in the jam packed traffic and long journeys. The driver’s seat has an 8-way power seat adjustment with lumbar support along with a tilt and a telescopic steering. The Accord has a cruise control system with buttons conveniently placed on the steering wheels that help the driver relax on long drives and maintain speed without bothering with the accelerator. The beige coloured interior looks impressive. The dashboard seems very sophisticated and has a woody garnish on instrument panel. The Accord has an advanced audio system with a centre multi-selector jog dial and rear audio controls. It has a scroll-down screen that displays various data through different connections. Besides, it also has a USB port. In addition the Honda Accord also has features like leather steering wheel (Luxury 4-Spoke with Aluminium Colour Panel), leather gear knob, vanity mirror with illumination, map light with sun glass box, lockable glove box with illumination, outside temperature gauge, digital clock, seat back pocket, front and rear door pocket, front and rear cup holder, rear centre armrest with trunk, rear ac vents, rear reading lights, rear foldable seat, Front Center Armrest with Multifunctional Console and noise and vibration reduction carpet.
In terms of safety, Honda Accord is equipped with both active as well as passive features. The car consists of dual front i-SRS airbags, side airbags with OPDS (Passenger), side curtain airbags, ABS, EBD, BA, front active headrest, G-CON, ACE (Advanced Compatible Engineering), high mount brake light, seat belt pretensioner & load limiter system, 3-point rear seat belt, rear centre headrest, security alarm system, immobilizer and wave blade jack knife keys.
Overall, Honda Accord looks very elegant and is comfortable with high engine performance. The only deterrent is its price which is a bit expensive.
