Fiat Grande Punto

Fiat Grande Punto available in 1 variant

The third generation of Fiat supermini in the ‘Punto’ series, the Grande Punto was unveiled at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor event and it reached the markets later that year. In India, it went on sales in June 2009. Free from its failed sales and service tie-up with Tata Motors, Fiat started working on fresh products to bring customers back to its exclusive showrooms and the Grande Punto was also re-launched in September 2012. Sharing a stand with Fiat’s already popular Linea, the Grande Punto was developed mutually by Fiat Style Centre and well-known designer Giugiaro of Italdesign.

One glance at this beauty tells you that the Italians are actually good at design. The Punto displays a well sculpted silhouette from all angles. The prominent light in front and the elongated hood appear sporty and lend it plenty of character. With a compact rear and angled high mounted lights, this Fiat hatch gets an athletic look. In dimly lit environment the dash seems smart with a blaze from the chrome-ringed dials. The doors close with a heavy thud and this is something that you usually get only in European cars. Sitting inside the car, you feel nicely sheltered from the exterior elements and the ground clearance also seems good.

At first glace, the interiors may not seem as spacious as you anticipate in a 4 metre long car. But yes the front seats are big, there is ample headroom and the cabin feels airy. The steering wheel and driver’s seat are also adjustable for height.

The well equipped Fiat Grande Punto is loaded with an iPod dock, voice-enabled Bluetooth to pair with your mobile, climate control, anti-lock brake system and two airbags. The info display unit lets you know the cabin temperature and the car’s fuel consumption. Grande Punto’s steering wheel has a nice grip and the gear lever also feels sporty. The boot has an approximate capacity of 280 litres and that makes for lot of space for a car in this segment.

Fiat Grande Punto comes in both petrol and diesel variants.

With its 1.3 multijet diesel engine, this hatchback has adequate power despite a weight heavier than Ritz and Swift. At higher speeds, the engine works harder with its short gearings. It hits 100 kms/hour in about 18 seconds. The in-gear timing is good particularly the 40-100 kms /hour in the 4th gear. It seems that Fiat has acknowledged the significance of fuel economy in India after its experience with the earlier version of Palio and so the Punto Grande diesel gives a decent 13.7 kms per litre in the city and 17.5 kms per litre on the highway. The petrol variant delivers a little less at 10.2 kms /litre in the city and 14.6 kms per litre on the highway.

The ride and handling proficiency of the Grande Punto does impress. It is a car that you will enjoy driving with its elegantly balanced chassis, wonderful grip, precise gearing and remarkable damping. It moves smoothly at all speeds and the refined suspension does a good job by keeping you free from heavy jerks on Indian roads.

Fiat Grande Punto is available in an assortment of fascinating colours such as Oceanic Blue, Hip Hop Black, Tuscan Wine, Minimal Grey, New Pearl White and Exotica Red. While the price for petrol variants ranges between 5.47 lakhs and 7.55 lakhs, that of diesel ones starts from 6.26 lakhs and the top end version is priced at 8.29 lakhs.

Awarded the Autocar Magazine`s Design Award and Brazil’s `Carro Do anno 2008` (Car of the Year 2008), the Grande Punto was also elected Auto Inter-Americana 2008.

The strong built, looks and features of this hatchback especially in the top end model make it stylish and talented alternative to some established rivals.
