Audi R8 cars are devised, developed and produced by the Quattro GmbH subsidiary of Audi AG and the R8 Spyder is an open-top roadster variant of this range. It was launched in 2009 for the US, Canada, Australia, Japan and South Africa. Prior to this the car was brought to Latin American markets in the end of 2008.
In 2011, the R8 Spyder reached India with a 4.2 FSi V8 engine and the current model in our market has a 5.2 litre V10 petrol engine that churns 518 bhp and has 54 kgm of peak torque. It is mated to 7-Speed S tronic transmission.
With characteristic styling of a sports car, Audi R8 Spyder has a low stance and large air intakes. The hexagonal grille with fine chrome lines looks smart and the Audi rings are placed in centre of the bonnet’s front edge. To canalise air to the radiator, there are large, black air intakes. The front splitter made of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) that is an option with other R8 models is standard for the new Audi R8 Spyder. All-LED headlights look smart on the face – they have a specially devised control unit that converts the daytime running lights into turn signals. Headlamps also have separate LEDs for high & low beams and a static turning light.
Audi R8 Spyder uses 19 inch alloy wheels and tyre size is 235/35Z R19 for front and 295/30Z R19 for rear. The distinct look of this car at the back reflects in large, silver cowls and these have upright air intakes integrated onto them. The use of ultra light weight construction materials adds to the aerodynamics, precision and safe handling nature of R8 Quattro Spyder.
Inside the cockpit of R8 Spyder, its monoposto is the most striking feature. A large arc separates the driver’s area of the cockpit. All controls are clearly structured and ergonomically placed. There is a flat bottomed rim for the multi-function steering wheel. Speed is displayed in a digital format on the standard driver information system. Red rings on the dials and on gear selector knob add to the sporty looks of the roadster. Steering wheel mounted paddle shifters are standard.
Both the seats are well sculpted, heated and electrically adjustable for height & lumbar support. Automatic climate control adds to the comfort of driving this soft-top roadster even when the mercury levels are high. A 140 watt audio system with AM/FM radio, CD/MP3 player, USB, Aux ports, Bluetooth connectivity and steering wheel mounted controls are standard features. Hill start assist, Parking System Plus and cruise control are the driver centric attributes.
For safety, RS 8 Quattro Spyder is equipped with a range of tech rich elements that include ABS, EBD, brake assist, electronic stability program, and anti-slip regulation. There are 6 airbags for the driver and co-driver.
Audi R8 was named BusinessCar’s Sporting Car of the Year 2013. In the 2008 World Car of the Year awards, this Audi was honoured as World Performance Car of the Year and was also given World Design Car of the Year title. Readers of Motor Klassik magazine named it the "Classic Car of the Future 2009" in the Sports Car category.
Priced at Rs 2.12 crore (ex-showroom price Delhi), the R8 Spyder is a super car with staggering performance but this can obviously be enjoyed only on miles of clear, straight-line roads. This roadster trim of the R8 family competes with likes of Porsche 911 Convertible, Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster and Maserati GT Convertible.
