Scorpio Automatic

Most Roads in Indian cities are crowded and congested. They are like obstacle courses and are littered with potholes. Traffic is undisciplined and might is right. So, what kind of a vehicle makes the most sense in this scenario?

Here’s the argument for the Scorpio Automatic. First of all, the mHawk engine. This fantastic engine generates 120bhp of power. Mahindra hasn’t put a four-or- five-speed, but a six-speed auto ‘box in the Scorpio. This means that the mHawk’s power is instantly available every time you press the accelerator. So, closing gaps in traffic is effortless. Even people who swear by a manual gearbox’s responsiveness will be impressed. Since it’s an automatic, negotiating congested roads is a breeze. No exhausting clutching and shifting of gears. Plus, the anti-rollback feature prevents the Scorpio from rolling back when in the Drive mode. All these features work together to make your drive effortless, comfortable and hassle-free. And to make your life even easier, the auto ‘box is a rugged low-maintenance unit with self-dignostic capabilities.

Adding to the automatic’s charm are the various intelligent auto drive modes. Apart from the usual user-engaged modes that you control, the Scorpio has different driving modes for optimal shift quality in different driving conditions. Uphill and Downhill modes detect the gradient automatically for relevant shift schedules. In Fast-Off mode, the transmission will hold the current gear for a preset time period when the pedal is released abruptly, thus avoiding unnecessary, rapid gear shifts. And the Cold/Warm up mode selects appropriate shifting strategies depending on transmission oil temperatures.

Then there are those 235/70 R16 tyres and the Scorpio’s 180mm ground clearance. Where other cars have to gingerly crawl, the Scorpio just pummels its way through. And with the four-wheel drive, the Scorpio will just march over terrain that’s off-limits to others.

The Scorpio’s high seating position not only gives you a better view of the traffic ahead, but you also feel less claustrophobic when stuck in traffic. You are constantly looking over other vehicles, unless you are behind a truck or a bus. This high seating position has quite a few advantage.

On the battleground that is our road, where might is right, the Scorpio commands respect. Not many vehicles will challenge a Scorpio’s right of way. It’s intimidating presence clears the path ahead like no other car can.

And when you do get to a nice, open stretch of road, the Scorpio turns into a marathoner, galloping through the miles with relaxed ease. Mile after mile, after mile.

Here’s the icing on the cake. The Scorpio Automatic costs just Rs 40,000 more than the manual. That’s just Rs 11.20 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) What could be better?
