Renault Scala Breaks Cover

Renault’s attractive New Scala, as you may have figured out from these images, is a badge-engineered Nissan Sunny, sporting more aggressive styling cues.

Renault has changed the most prominent parts – the lights and the bumpers. The Scala’s headlights are sharper, tapering towards the large hexagonal grille. The Renault lozenge sits high on the bumper like on the Pulse hatchback, and the tail-lights have the same basic shape as the Sunny, but the ‘C’ motifs make them looks different. A large chrome strip and tighter lines on the rear bumper make its derriere look more cohesive. The only other change is the Scala’s new interior colour Scheme. Mechanically, both cars are exactly the same.

Jean Philippe Salar, head of Renault’s Mumbai design studio says, “The sporty styling direction comes from an aggreement to target younger customers with dynamic design.”

The aim was to develop this sporty design language for the Indian market, but at the same time, keep costs in check, So Salar’s brief to the designers was to maximise the differentiation with the Sunny using the least number of new parts.

And since all the New bits are localized, expect the Scala to be priced competitively. The Sunny is Nissan’s most successful car in India, Selling over 2,500 units per month and Renault will hope the Scala will prove equally successful.
