New Hyundai Elantra with 1.8 Gamma Engine 

The NU Gamma 1.8 ltrs engine was introduced by Hyundai to bridge the gap between its 1.6 Ltrs engine and 2.0 Lt Theta II GDI engine. It was first introduced internationally in 2011 Hyundai Elantra.

The fifth generation New Elantra scheduled for a launch around 1st week of Aug 2012, hopefully should carry forward all the improvements made in 1.8 Lt Gamma engine which is doing its duty quite admirably in 2011 Elantra in US markets.

Basis early information from the market and after analysing the performance figures (110 Kw /6500 Rpm Power and 178 Nm / 4700 Rpm Torque), we at
www.ecardlr.com believe that The New Hyundai Elantra petrol will have Hyundai’s most recent Nu Gamma engine under its hood. If our assumption is proven true then the Gamma Engine will have following innovations:

Aluminium engine block, cast iron cylinder head and cylinder liners and crank, thus resulting in a 33.6 Kg reduction in entire engine weight without compromising engine strength.

Like the Sonata GDi engine the valve train of the New Hyundai Elantra’s Gamma engine will also use Dual VTVT camshafts and hydraulic engine mounts, thus delivering optimum power, efficiency and refinement.

Roller Swing Arm and Hydraulic Lash Adjusters (HLA) will reduce friction and improve economy by 1% as compared to direct valve driving.

Maintenance Free Silent Timing Chain will enhance durability and also reduce NVH values.

A two stage plastic Variable Induction System (VIS) enabling switching between long and short intake during low and high speeds resulting in a increase in performance.

Crank shaft is Offset by 11 mm, so that when the piston is ready to move downwards in the power stroke from TDC (Top Dead Centre), there is less inertia to overcome and start the crank shaft turning.

All these innovations has helped Hyundai to eek out a 4% improvement in performance,  15% reduction in cost and 30% reduction in weight.

Hyundai Elantra Nu Gamma engine is mated to 6 speed manual and automatic transmission. Hyundai’s in-house developed 6 ratio automatic transmission is a torque converter unit which has 3 planet gears, 2 clutches and three brakes, making it comparably more compact, light and small Vs other 6 speed auto transmissions. The system also comes with a special locking mechanism which reduces in gears slippage from the traditional 10% to just 20 Rpm/Thousand, thus improving response and fuel economy.

All these investments by Hyundai seem to be reaping benefits in the world markets with the brand gaining consumer confidence with every passing day. We hope that Indian car buyers will be able to appreciate such efforts and repose even greater faith in the Hyundai marquee.
