PADDLE SHIFTERS: CONVENIENCE OF AUTOMATICS WITH THE THRILL OF MANUAL TRANSMISSION

From formula racing to everyday cars is a route most automobile improvement follows. After being tested in a fast forward mode on the tracks, these new car features/improvements are adopted by regular cars to provide creature comfort and convenience to regular car drivers. Paddles shifters which were earlier limited to premium top-end cars and SUV’s are now increasingly being used by less pricier sedans. Paddle shift allows the use of automatic transmission as manual mode with gear shifts being done by the flick of shifters mounted on the back of the steering wheel.

SEMI-AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Transmissions having the provision of paddle shifters are called semi-automatic transmission. Semi-automatic means, that in addition to the regular modes of driving in case of automatic transmission i.e. P (Park), N (Neutral), D (Drive) and R (Reverse) there is one additional mode marked as S (Sports Mode), this extra mode named S indicates the presence of paddle shifters in a car.

Paddle shift works when the automatic gear box is slotted in the S mode. In this mode the driver can change the gears, just like manual transmission, but without the use of the clutch mechanism.

PADDLE SHIFTERS

Paddle shifters are usually located behind the steering wheel. Depending upon the manufacturers, there can be two shifters on either side of steering wheel or one shifter alone is used to do, both operations of shifting. Usually in two shifters option, there is marking on the paddles with + and – indicating up-shift and downshift respectively.
Many manufacturers also use single paddle shifter. For example Mitsubishi Outlander uses only one paddle shifter with automatic transmission in S mode. While up flick means shifting the gear to the next higher gear downshift means the reverse.

VW’s SUV Tourage uses up-shift and down-shift buttons mounted on the steering wheel instead of using Paddles shifters behind the steering wheel

The key advantage of paddle shifters is in their ability to offer a car driver the convenience of both types of transmission i.e. manual as well as automatic. Automatic transmission mode can be used for city driving whilst manual mode through paddle shifters can be used on the highways. The gears can be changed without using the conventional clutch.
